<image:title>Da Kine Blog - Hunky Dory 40 years later - All the strangers came today</image:title>
<image:caption>Hunky Dory is the first album I owned by David Bowie. At the time, I would have preferred it to be Let’s Dance, but I couldn’t convince my mom to buy it for me on just any ol’ day. So, it was something I was waiting to receive on my birthday, which was months away. I had $4 saved up and was looking through the “bargain basement” cassette tapes at the new drugstore in town. I remember the store’s grand opening, drawing the salt-of-the-earth townspeople with free soda, hotdogs, and balloons filled with helium, not just plain air and put on a long white plastic stick to make it look like it was floating. In the bargain bin, which was literally a bin you had to dig through, I found Hunky Dory, an album released by Bowie in 1971. It was 1983 and the cassette was $1.99. I bought it. I listened. I thought, “This is terrible. I can’t believe I spent my savings on this.” I was afraid of the music, but I kept listening. Then my assessment ratcheted up from “terrible” to “strange.” The music was coming from a place I didn’t understand. It made me feel new kinds of feelings. It gave me the intuition that life could be more interesting than a free balloon, if I wanted it to be. Before I knew it, Hunky Dory was the best thing ever. When I eventually received Let’s Dance for my birthday, I loved it immediately, of course. However, in the 40 years since then, I’ve listened to Hunky Dory much, much, much more often. "Retrospectively, Hunky Dory has been critically acclaimed as one of Bowie's best works, and features on several lists of the greatest albums of all time. Within the context of his career, it is considered to be the album where ‘Bowie starts to become Bowie’, definitively discovering his voice and style.” The album did the same for me.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In the latest episode of talking to myself on Twitter, I ranted about FB’s algorithm banning me from posting kaukauchronicles.org URLs to my group named Kau Kau Chronicles. The group is described as "A place to talk about recipes posted to kaukauchronicles.org.” The algorithm calls my post spam and gives me a choice of two radio buttons: I agree or I disagree. Disagreement is futile. There’s no human, who would likely see the error, to appeal to. So, I asked this question of Twitter: Can AI be any smarter than its creator? I received several replies—from bots that were clearly bots, phishing for personal data. So I think I received my answer. I realized that I was working under a flawed assumption. I thought that for AI to take over, it needed to be smarter than us. And by smarter, I meant, have a capacity for humanity. I realized that we're already living under the control of inhumane AI. Each time it touches us, we beg it for an empathy that it's incapable of. And in that repeated act, we become less and less human.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dennis and I are enjoying these collaborations. I create a collage. He creates text and adds it to the collage. I add pastels, watercolors, and erasure tape. ❤️ Every time I draw or paint, I can’t help but remember doing a charcoal drawing of some bell peppers for a class in college. The professor was so frustrated by what I was doing, she grabbed the charcoal out of my hand, “fixed” my drawing, and said, “See? Why can’t you do that?” The story is layered. I stuck out like a powerless blue-collar sore thumb in that class. Her son was held hostage somewhere in the Middle East. For me, art was and still is, about revelation, not perfection. If I wanted to look at some perfect bell peppers, I’d just look at some fucking bell peppers.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dennis and I collaborated on this one. ❤️ When I first started cutting out images for collages, I feared it. The ultrasharp x-acto knife and the way it slowly dulls itself just by cutting paper. I hated the precision required. You have only one chance to cut out this amazing spoon—don’t fuck it up! After taking a collage workshop, I learned to keep my eye not on where the blade is, but rather, on where I want it to go. Reminds me of being a Denny’s server years ago. To avoid spilling coffee from the six mugs on your tray as you walk them over to a table at the far end of the restaurant, don’t look at the mugs. Collaging has helped me to look, not look, and practice losing precious things. This last one is especially important these days.</image:caption>

What does it mean for a book on geishas to be in a bargain bin at a chain bookstore in America? Over the years, I’ve cut up pages in the book to do a lot of erasure poetry and collages. As annoyed as I am about the existence of coffee table books about geishas and the fetish-driven myths they enable, I guess the book has given me a lot. I work well when given something to resist. Thanks Geishas.</image:caption>

<image:caption>. . . He is very tired of escaping and the reason the thought of it scares him so much is as simple as it always was: absolute absence of option. Because where? Wherever you happen to go it's the same thing all over again. First, you find yourself there waiting for you. And then you have a place you'll have to leave; you leave to find a place . . . So many rooms now, the house so much bigger, homesickness already beginning to tighten at his throat, and he's not even gone. He is, of course, quite gone. And yet here he is---someone else figure it out. Yes, it seems to have doubled in size; either that or he has just turned four. There's nothing that can't happen now. . . . He's ready to take a bite Of the pink tomatoes while his mouth Is still full with something else, To hurry it down his throat With a swig of beer, shrugging When his wife says, You're setting A bad example. It doesn't matter--- Too many eyes without centers For one day. Too many Dice, cards, dogs with faces like sharks Tethered to chains. It gives him An empty feeling below his stomach, And all he can think to call it Is appetite. And so he will lie When he kisses his napkin and says Hits the spot, as his daughter will lie When she learns to parrot him, Not yet knowing what her own appetite Points to. To feel the water push back. Fish introduced, deer listening. A soil hurled at my feet in excruciating slowness, the end. We rowed into sunburn, knew to jab deep and try to pull through. No one, when I asked them in their hospital sick beds, ever wanted me to leave the TV on, no one wanted an artificial heart. Day 6: #TheSealeyChallenge</image:caption>

<image:caption>I’ve long admired and appreciated the people who participate in #TheSealeyChallenge: An annual “community challenge to read one book of poetry a day for the month of August.” The dedication! The expertise! The generosity! You know who you are. ✨ Rewind to March 2020: Enter sorrow. Enter death. Enter rage. Enter sobering truths about human nature. After much denial, I realized that I’d be spending a lot of time alone with my racing mind. No more darting out of the apartment into the distractions of public spaces the moment the opportunity for contemplation arose. Be still. Be quiet. Feel. Forged in this pandemic crucible—some kind of focus. August 2021: So, yeah, like, um, I guess I have time to read 31 books of poetry in 31 days? With gratitude, I begin.</image:caption>
